In a polygamous world, boys could no longer grow up taking marriage for granted. Many would instead see marriage as a trophy in a sometimes brutal competition for wives.

Losers would understandably burn with resentment, and most young men, even those who eventually won, would fear losing. Although much has been said about polygamy’s inegalitarian implications for women who share a husband, the greater victims of inequality would be men who never become husbands.

In “Are Americans Polygamous?” (August, 1947), David L. Cohn considered the question of whether marriage is a failed institution in America. Because divorce rates had increased six hundred percent since the Civil War, Cohn speculated as to whether polygamy might be what Americans were looking for.

He suggested that it was monogamy and not polygamy that bred instability—leading to divorce and leaving broken families in its wake. The rising divorce rate inspired Cohn to wonder whether monogamous marriage might be subtly evolving into something else.

Those people who favor the polygamy simply make jokes. They will never try it in reality. And the polygamy is only practiced by the wealthy and the ruling classes.

Balancing the Relationships

In most monogamous societies, a considerable number of males are in high favor of polygamy. Perhaps they just want an immediate experience of pleasure. We can call it a bit of antagonistic psychology. When a kind of manner or behavior is unusual or even prohibited in some areas, a number of people are willing to favor or go after it.
However, these favorers are not inclined to put their points into practice. They know that things seem to be not as simple as they can imagine. In a polygamous family, the husband must be faced with a large amount of social problems and heavy burden. He must be good at balancing the complicated relationships among his wives. He can not show a bit of preference to one of his wife.

This is because, under normal conditions, the number of males and females in any society is relatively equal. I think there is a connection between the high divorce rates among monogamous couples in this country and the vigor with which monogamous marriage is promoted as the only legitimate marital relationship. Maybe the traditional “You are now bound to each other by law” form of marriage has passed it’s usefulness in modern society and that if people are really concerned with escalating divorce rates, allowing people the freedom to decide their own form of “marital bliss” is the way to go, if that means some people will choose polygamous relationships then I can see no moral reason for any other individual or societal group to interfere with a voluntary relationship that two or more consenting adults entered into.

This has been true for more than a quarter of a century. In 1974, a government survey found Muslims to account for 5.6% of all bigamous marriages and upper-caste Hindus accounting for 5.8%. The difference may appear to be small but it is big, in real terms. The 1971 census records 45.3 crore Hindus and six crore Muslims. Allowing for women and children to make up 65% of each group, as many as one crore Hindu men had more than one wife in 1971, compared to 12 lakh Muslim men.

Conversion to Islam for polygamy

There have been many incidents of non-Muslim men converting to Islam solely with the purpose of practicing polygamy legally. For example, actor Dharmendra has been reported to have converted to Islam so that he could legally marry actress Hema Malini as his second wife. In December 2008, a controversy arose when the then Deputy Chief Minister of Haryana, Chandar Mohan, and Anuradha Bali, the former Assistant Advocate General of Haryana, converted to Islam adopting the names Chand Mohammad and Fiza, so that Mohan could marry Bali as his second wife.However he converted back to Hinduism after a while. Such incidents have raised concerns over the use of Islam for polygamy.

Polygamy is legal in Burma/Myanmar

Polygamy is legally permissible in Burma, also known as Myanmar, making it the only predominantly Buddhist nation in the world to allow for such unions. Polygamy unions are legal under Customary Law. The law explicitly states that the husband must treat his second wife equal to his first. It is not clear whether or not there are limits to how many spouses a man can have.
